Run only if you must

Run only if you must. If running is an imperative
that comes from inside you and not from your doctor.
Otherwise, heed the inner calling to your own Play.
Listen if you can to the person you were and are
and can be. Then do what you do best and feel best at.
Something you would do for nothing. Something that
gives you security and self-acceptance and a feeling
of completion; even moments when you are
fused with your universe and your Creator.
When you find it, build your life around it.
-          Dr. George Sheehan

Run only if you must.

I never get tired of reading this quote by Dr Sheehan.
I believe every word and accept its reality and simplicity. Those of us who are runners simply run, there is no question, no doubt. We run, we do not allow ourselves any room for excuses.

Whether it’s a couple of miles or a twenty miler, runners get their daily fix. Runners embrace their journey on the roads, tracks or trails. Running is and will always be a part of our lives.

Runners do not take voluntary vacations from running. It is rare, if ever, to travel for business or pleasure and not bring our shoes and shorts (tops for the ladies). If and only if, a serious injury occurs are we on the sidelines. We would rather limp and at times struggle with a run than stay on the couch.

On the surface this thought process might be considered obsessive compulsive by many. I will never say serious runners are OCD, no way.

OK, we may be OCD, probably are.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.
